Secretary Locke, with local and government officials, broke ground in La Jolla, Calif., for two new facilities that will be dedicated to ocean science on the campus of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC-San Diego. The buildings are supported by Commerce's NOAA and NIST, and will feature state-of-the-art marine life tanks and cutting-edge science labs.
Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) submits an updated facilities master plan for its Gaithersburg, Md. campus, featuring new buildings, energy and environmental improvements funded in part by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Washington (Oct. 5)—The Department of Commerce's National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) announces that it has awarded the first four grants under NTIA’s State Broadband Data and Development Grant Program to fund activities in California, Indiana, North Carolina, and Vermont. The program, funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will increase broadband access and adoption through better data collection and broadband planning. The data will be displayed in NTIA’s national broadband map, a tool that will inform policymakers' efforts and provide consumers with improved information on the broadband Internet services available to them.
